Wednesday, July 30, 2014: The End

Today's happy thing is that this blog project is over. But I'm not happy because it's over; I'm happy because it happened. I am so grateful I challenged myself to do this. I just spent that last year--365 consecutive days--in search of things to be happy about and things to be grateful for. I don't know if there's a better way to spend one's time!

Here's what I learned:

1. It's hard to get decent pictures with the camera on a phone.

2. Selfies are also hard.

3. I get a lot of joy and satisfaction out of creating things.

4. My simple blog project may have only been followed by a handful of people, but I know it made a difference for a few people. When I started the project, I didn't know that would happen; I just wanted to prove to myself--and whoever else needs the proof--that there's always something to be happy about.

5. Some days, life is so hard that the things that bring happiness have to be simple, little, seemingly insignificant things. But that doesn't make them any less valuable than the things that seem bigger and better. Those bigger things are often just more memorable.

6. The most memorable happy things weren't things. They were people and the time I spent with them.

7. "Life is beautiful, especially when you are looking for the beautiful things that happen every day." The sentence concludes every blog post in this project. So, one could believe that as I was repeating the phrase day after day, it came to loose it's meaning. I actually had a keyboard shortcut for it on my phone so when I wrote each post, I didn't even type the whole sentence. I realized a few months ago that it had been a while since I thought about what I meant by that. So much of this life is good and beautiful and worthwhile. But if you aren't looking for that, it will pass you by and all there will be to remember is sadness.

8. This project isn't really over. I won't be documenting it every day anymore, but I have every intention of continuing to seek out things/moments/ideas/people that are those beautiful parts of this life.

Life is beautiful, especially when you are looking for the beautiful things that happen every day.

I've been working in memorizing The Family: A Proclamation to the World over the past few weeks. I've only got two and a half paragraphs left! Today, I was saying it out loud, and only stumbled a few times!

His is a picture of a copy that's hanging above my kitchen sink. There are a few other copies strategically placed around my apartment so I can review it frequently.

Today, Loveduck sent me this adorable picture of her and her companion! I think she's so pretty! It makes me happy to see her cute smile.

I missed a phone call today, then received a voicemail. When I went to listen to he voicemail, my phone told me my inbox was 90% full. So I spent some time deleting a few. Most of the voicemails are from Littlest Sister or my parents just telling me they love me, and I keep them cause sometimes I just like to listen to them. I realized that pretty much every message from my dad starts the same: "Hi, Melissa. This is your dad." "Hi, Melissa. This is your dad." "Hi, Melissa. This is your dad." I think it's sort of funny, but mostly enduring.

I think the happiest moment of today was when I clocked out at work. I did 40 hours this week, and I am beat!

This evening, I was invited to watch a movie with some friends. We watched a version of Much Ado About Nothing with Catherine Tate and David Tennant. Pretty good! But mostly it reminded me a little of high school. I was in that play my senior year! I didn't act, but I played in a string quartet during the wedding scene near the middle of the play. Good times.

I was getting gas for my car during the afternoon today--the hottest part of the day. All of a sudden, the gas attendant came up to me and offered me a free bottle of water, straight from the cooler! Yes, please!
